The Mitsubishi Noncitizen (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover Sport utility vehicle manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. Information technology was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan in 2001.

The archetype Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-As-a-bird' manner",[1] and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of free, adventure-occupied motoring pleasure."[2] The Outlander nameplate which replaced it induced a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of dangerous undertaking."[1]

The moment generation of the fomite was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander identify, although production of the experienced rendering continuing in latitude. It was reinforced on the companionship's GS platform, and used various engines developed aside Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were factory-made by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander.[3] Planetary gross sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in Oct 2016, 15 eld after its market plunge.[4]

As part of the third genesis line-up, Mitsubishi launched in Jan 2013 a board loanblend model titled Alien PHEV. As of September 2021[update], spheric sales totaled 290,000 units,[5] and accordant to JATO Kinetics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's completely-time Charles Herbert Best selling punch-in hybrid since December 2018.[6] As of 2019[update], EU is the leading market with ended 126,000 units sold through January 2019,[6] [7] and the Alien sparking plug-in loanblend catalogued as Europe's best-selling card hybrid car for five years functional, 2015 to 2019.[6]

The fourth-generation model was discharged 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alinement, the fourthly-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail.[8]

The first-generation Alien/Airtrek and was based connected the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Machine Bear witness. The ASX (Active Sports Crossing over) represented Mitsubishi's glide path to the industry wide crossover SU trend for retaining the all-season and off-touring abilities offered by a high flat coat clearance and four-wheel get, while tranquilize oblation railroad car-wish levels of emissions, economy, and size.[9]

The Airtrek was first introduced to the Japanese commercialise on 20 June 2001, and was sold at Mitsubishi Japan dealership chain called Car Plaza. It offered a choice of either a 126 PS (93 kilowatt) 4G63 2.0 L or a 139 PS (102 kilowatt) 4G64 2.4 L GDI, mated to a standard INVECS-II 4-speed automatic transmission. Both front- and 4WD were available. The quatern-wheel drive version uses active differentials for the frontmost and rear axles, with a viscous coupling unit for the eye operation. A performance-oriented poser, named the Turbo-R, was introduced in 2002 and misused a detuned version of the Lancer Evolution's 4G63T 2.0 L I4 turbo.[10] The engine produced 240 PS (180 kW) and 343 N⋅m (253 lb⋅foot), although in export markets the Foreigner version's production was reduced to 202 PS (149 kW) and 303 N⋅m (223 lb⋅ft). The availability of four-cylinder engines under 2.0 liters offered Japanese buyers a vehicle that was in compliance with Nipponese regulations concerning exterior dimensions and engine translation, however, the outdoor dimensions exceed Japanese regulations for the "compact" assignment.

The Foreigner arrived in 2003 in North America, replacement the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, with a qualified front grille and headlights which raised the whole length away approximately 130 millimetres (5.1 in), and the two models were manufactured in parallel thereafter. It shared its political program with the Mitsubishi Grandis, too introduced in 2003.[ citation needed ] A variant of the 4G64 powerplant was offered first, while a 4G69 2.4 L SOHC MIVEC I4 producing 120 kW (160 PS) and 220 N⋅m (160 pound⋅ft), and the turbocharged 4G63T appeared in 2004. All had the option of front- surgery 4WD.

In respective Southeastward American markets information technology was famous as the Montero Noncitizen, to benefit from an association with the strong-merchandising Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

Connected 17 October 2006, Mitsubishi launched the intermediate generation model, dropping the Airtrek in Japan pro of adopting the global name.[11] It features a new DOHC 2.4 L 16-valve MIVEC engine; INVECS-Triad continuously variable transmission (CVT), Mitsubishi's AWC organization which features electronically controlled quartet-roulette wheel-drive and stability control, on a flexile Mitsubishi GS platform. The North American version, powered by a newly designed 6B31 3.0 L V6 SOHC MIVEC was shown in April 2006 at the New York City Auto Show prior to its liberation in Oct the same yr. Referable the availability of a V6 engine, Mitsubishi returned to offer a shorter version of this fomite and reintroduced the Mitsubishi RVR along 17 February 2010. The usage of a four-piston chamber engine below 2.0 liters offers Japanese buyers a vehicle that was in complaisance with Asian nation regulations concerning exterior dimensions and locomotive translation, which has assess advantages, giving buyers the power to purchase a vehicle capable of seating seven people without paying the tax penalty of a larger engine.

The ordinal generation Outlander went on sale in EU in February 2007, and this time included a diesel engine – essential in the Continent market at the clip. Mitsubishi chose to purchase Volkswagen's 2.0-litre Pumpe-Düse unit with 140 PS (103 kW), as as wel installed in the European market Grandis. Before this yet went happening sale, Mitsubishi had distinct that there was a need for a more hefty diesel selection and away November 2007 higher conclusion diesel models received PSA's 2.2-liter DW12 common rail diesel with 156 PS (115 kW). Some diesels were labelled "Di-D" by Mitsubishi. In Sept 2010 Mitsubishi's own 2.3-liter 4N14 diesel engine with 177 PS (130 kW) was introduced spell the Volkswagen engine was discontinued. The PSA building block continued to glucinium available in definite countries.

The Outlander, which features Mitsubishi's RISE safe body, received a four-star evaluation from the Euro NCAP elevator car safe performance assessment programme.[12] One of its unique features is something Mitsubishi calls a "Flap-Fold Tailboard"; it is a ii-piece tailboard integrated into the rear abundant that folds downwards for rich loading, while serving American Samoa a bench when the tailgate is open, able to accommodate up to 180 kg (400 lb).[13]

In its home commercialize of Japan it was the best-selling SUV from October 2006 to March 2007,[14] while in the U.S. grocery store it achieved 1,694 and 2,108 sales in November and December 2006, the first two full months it was available;[15] [16] Mitsubishi hoped for at least 4,000 sales per month in the United States.[17] In Chilly, where both generations were on sale simultaneously, the new model was badged Outlander K2.

Hyperbolic demand for the Lancer, and the consequent effects on the capacity of the company's Mizushima production facility, have obliged Mitsubishi to reassess production of the Outlander. In September 2007, they proclaimed that from 2008, production of European market Outlanders would be transferred from Nagoya to its NedCar plant in the Netherlands, patc the Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 would bear their production transferred from Mizushima to Nagoya.[18]

The model was facelifted for the 2008 model year, although the 2007 wicket carried over in the United States and Canada for 2008-09 until some other cosmetic surgery in the 2010 worthy year.

At the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the company displayed a Mitsubishi Evolander (straight off famous as Mitsubishi Outlander Ralliart) conception, powered by a 240 kW (330 Postscript) supercharged version of the fomite's 6B31 V6 engine and equipped with suitably uprated suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, body outfit and interior.[19] A back show car, an Outlander GT Prototype with a first grille based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, was exhibited at the 2009 Greater New York International Auto Show,[20] and formed the ground of the facelifted model introduced in late 2009.[21]

On with a major facelift for the 2010 model year, the top ending Outlander XLS (GT in the US) introduced a new colour multi-subprogram display and the Mitsubishi S-AWC AWD system. The lower trims keep on the previous MFD and the less advanced AWC AWD system. Likewise, the interior was also slenderly revised to incorporate leather into the dashboard trim and doors.

Interior

Mitsubishi unveiled the third-generation Outlander at the 2012 Geneva Motor Render. The production version of the Outlander was debuted in Russia in July 2012, and was introduced in other European markets in Sep 2012.[32] Spell the new vehicle was introduced to North-central United States at the Nov 2012 LA Auto Express it was not available for purchase until early 2014. Northward American Outlanders continued on the second-contemporaries platform through model year 2013. Yet, the third propagation Foreigner are not sold in the Philippine market due to poor sales, in favour of of the third-row Mitsubishi Montero Sport.[33]

The redesigned model has a new lightweight body that weighs approximately 200 pounds (90 kg) little than the previous model due to extensive use of high ductile strength steel.[33] With a get down drag coefficient of cd 0.33, fire economy has been improved over the previous model.[34] Inside, the splasher and front doors are covered with soft touch material, the seats are redesigned, and there is good sound insulation.

The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts with a stabilizer bar, and the rear suspension is a multi-contact design with a stabilizer bar.[35] Electric Power Steering reduces load connected the engine compared to a mechanics system and helps to improve fire economy. Disk brakes are installed happening all tetrad wheels, with 11.6 in (294 mm) vented rotors in front along with 11.9 in (302 millimetre) solid rotors in back.

Newly uncommitted safety features include a Self-assertive Collision Mitigation system, a Lane departure warning system, a driver knee airbag to reduce leg injury in a crash, and adaptive cruise control. In addition, the Outlander has standard driver and passenger front airbags, front side torso airbags along with curtain airbags, Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene with EBD, Adhesive friction Control Logical system, Active Stability Control, Alfred Hawthorne Start Assist, and a brake pedal that recedes to forestall wooden leg injury in a collapse.[34]

In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Main road Prophylactic, the Outlander received a top off score of "Good" in every category.[36] When equipped with the optional Forward Collision Mitigation organisation, the motorcar received the Institute's Top Safety Blame+ award. The vehicle also received full five star overall ratings in the United States, Japanese, and Continent New Automobile Assessment Programs.[37] [38] [39]

The third coevals Mitsubishi Outlander was launched in Malaya in April 2016 with a 2.4 liter engine and being full strange.[40] In September 2017, a 2.0 cubic decimetre engine locally assembled variate debuted[41] before existence purchasable in Oct 2018.[42] In January 2018, the 2.4 cubic decimeter engine form became more affordable referable section assembly.[43] In October 2018, a limited edition 'Sports Edition' limited to 120 units based on the 2.0 cubic decimetr engine variant became available and faced dual-tone paint.[44]

2015 facelift [edit]

At the 2015 New York Supranational Machine Prove, Mitsubishi debuted a heavily revised Alien for the 2016 model year.[45] The vehicle features new plan language called "Dynamic Harbor" that wish be the basis for future vehicles in other segments. The revised headlights now include LED DRLs with the choice of laden LED headlights. Inside the cabin, Mitsubishi made refinements to the steering wheel, headliner, tooshie folding seats, and door controls.

Besides cosmetic changes, the updated Outlander has somewhat reduced cabin noise via increased use of effectual insulation, thicker door tras, dynamic dangling and differential dampers, and thicker weatherstripping. The suspension and steering are re-adjusted and a hot generation Jatco CVT8 transmission introduced for cardinal-cylinder models. The revised SU first went on sale in Russia in April 2015, followed by the Australia in June and Canada and the Caribbean Sea in July.

2018 lift [edit]

The Outlander received other facelift for the 2019 model year. Changes included a novel twin blade grille that contains black inserts, revised front and rear abundant design, and new 18-column inch alloy wheels.[46]

Outlander PHEV powertrain

The plug-in crossed has a 2.0-l 4-cylinder MIVEC gasoline engine, coupled with an electric powertrain, derived from the electric systems used on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, it produces a conjunctive 197 hp (147 kW). Two 60 kilowatt exciting motors independently power the front and rear wheels, while the petrol-powered engine can be put-upon as a generator for the motors, and/operating theater power the vehicle directly. The combustion engine can buoy only send power to the front wheels equally there is no driveshaft linking IT to the rear wheels.[48] Located along the left position of the engine (positioned transaxle-style), the front motor is a smaller, lighter, and higher end product rendering of the permanent magnet synchronous electric motive used in the i-MiEV.[32] [49]

The Outlander PHEV has a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery take capable of delivering an all-electrical range of 52.3 klick (32.5 mi) under the Raw European Driving Cycle.[50] Under the Japanese JC08 test the complete-electric range is 60 km (37 Military Intelligence Section 6), with a top speed of 120 kph (75 miles per hour).[51] The battery load down is located in a dust- and waterproof encasement positioned beneath the passenger compartment subfloor and betwixt the front and rear axles, with no trespass into the passenger compartment. It consists of 80 cells designed in series.[49] Mitsubishi's poin was to attain a combined fire economic system for Japan in "Electron volt Drive" mode of 67 klick/L tantamount, or equivalent to nearly 157 miles per U.S. gallon (MPGe). Fuel economy in hybrid musical mode for Japan is 5.3 L/100 km (44 mpg‑US).[32] [51]

First-string (left-handed) and CHAdeMO quick charging (right) sockets

The card hybrid comes fitted out with two charging sockets, regular and quick charging CHAdeMO. When charging at home the driver bathroom prefer between a standard 3-pin fireplug socket Beaver State via a dedicated Electron volt charging point. The vehicle comes with a 5 m (16 ft) charging transmission line for connection to a standard plug socket. From a standard plug, charging from empty to wide-cut charge takes about five hours. From a dedicated charging distributor point at home or at a public charging point, it takes about 3.5 hours for a full charge. The DC rapid charging socket can be used at CHAdeMO charging stations. Fast charging allows for an 80% charge in more or less 25 minutes.[52]

The 2019 pose Outlander has a 13.8 kWh battery, which increases the range of mountains to 65 km (40 mi) and the top speed to 135 km/h (84 mph).[53]

Drive modes

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features three driving modes: "EV Drive", "Series Hybrid", and "Parallel Hybrid". The drivetrain automatically selects one of trio drivetrain modes for optimal performance and efficiency. In "EV Drive" way the vehicle is driven in an eco-friendly carrying out mood by the deuce galvanic motors, with energy being supplied exclusively aside the lithium-ion battery pack, and becomes a 100% electric-powered zero-expelling vehicle. In Series operating theatre Parallel drive modes, the generator produces electrical energy from the engine and stores it in the assault and battery pack.[49]

The engine is fitted with what Mitsubishi calls Innovative Valve timing Natural philosophy Control (MIVEC), which claims to maximize power production, ameliorate fuel efficiency, and reduce exhaust emissions. The system works aside continuously varying the timing of the intake valves, according to locomotive speed, when operative in "Parallel Hybrid" fashion. The engine functions solely to bring fort electricity in "Serial publication Hybrid" mode and is mainly wont to provide motive force in "Duplicate Crossed" mode.

The drivetrain switches to "Series Hybrid" when the energy level remaining in the battery pack is low or when the need arises for additional acceleration. In that mode the two electric motors are powered by the battery pack and the gas-powered generator. The vehicle prat also change over to parallel hybrid mode. In this drive mood, the spark plug-in hybrid uses its high complement of available resources: the gasoline engine, the two physical phenomenon motors and gasoline-steam-powered locomotive author. The "Parallel Hybrid" mode is the well-nig commonly utilized when driving in a long-haul/high-speed steady-state cruise manner, such as on the open road or pike. This is the most efficient drivetrain mode under these types of driving circumstances.[49]

Variable regenerative braking

The Outlander PHEV features regenerative braking during typical deceleration (braking or coasting), with the front and lift electric motors working as generators so that electrical energy can be generated and fed bet on into the main battery pack. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid has a set-functioning that allows the device driver to ascendancy the effectiveness of the engine braking with paddles behind the steering wheel. The number one wood switches on regenerative braking either by sliding the central selector switch to the "B" set back, Beaver State by operative the paddles.[54]

Variable regenerative braking is achieved by tapping the paddles, the strength of the regenerative braking system could be stepped through sextuplet different settings—B0 to B5—allowing the driver to adjust how much top executive is restored into the battery, and to Libra the amount of braking carried out with the amount of momentum the driver wants to maintain. For model, down a long but ankle-deep slope it is ameliorate to observe rolling with a small take down of recuperation, while down a steep hill, the driver can set the system to maximum regeneration. At its to the highest degree aggressive setting, the regen system would easily hold the Outlander at 80 km/h (50 mph) down a moderate downward-sloping slope. With minimum regen, the car would conserve momentum and glide without whatever power draw.[55] [56]

Driver-activated modes

ECO Mode control switch

Consign (left) and Save (opportune) control buttons.

The Outlander PHEV features three number one wood-activated modes:[49]

  • ECO Mode: in this mode the vehicle reduces both fuel and electrical energy usage for increased efficiency merely with the touch of the button.
  • Battery Save Mode: In that device driver-activated mode, the vehicle automatically preserve the energy within the drive battery pack aside in operation the vehicle in hybrid fashion, running the engine when necessary to maintain the res publica of charge at round the same level as when the Economise button was pressed. The "Battery Save Modal value" will only operate once the battery carry's energy level falls below 90% full. For example, this mode would allow the vehicle to be driven in urban dealings with the engine/author on to maintain a higher level of battery charge; it could then be deactivated, allowing the vehicle to be driven through a neighborhood silently at an appropriate speed in Electron volt Drive Mode.
  • Bombardment Flush Mode: when activating, whether the vehicle is in question Beaver State at a standstill, the locomotive engine will generate electricity to be Fed into the stamp battery pack, forcing the vehicle to operate in hybrid mode. For example, if the engine is idleness and the fomite is not automotive, selecting this manner will replenish a flat-growing energy state within the battery pack back up to 80% fully charged in approximately 40 minutes.

Gross sales [edit]

Sales began in Japan by former January 2013, becoming the first SUV plug-in hybrid in the marketplace. Retail prices motley from ¥3,324,000 (US$36,650) to ¥4,297,000 (The States$47,380).[51] [57] The engine displacement of the largest version was kept to a lower place 2.5 litres so as to obviate having Japanese buyers having to pay more annual road tax which would affect sales.[ citation needed ]

The Continent version was unveiled at the 2013 Hollands Motor Show. The European version is similar to the Japanese mould except for pocket-sized adjustments to comply with European Economic Community requirements, and Mitsubishi expected an emission valuation of 44 g/km.[58] Retail deliveries began in Europe in October 2013,[59] source in the Netherlands and followed by the Nordic countries,[60] [61] Sales in Australia were primitively regular for June 2013, but began exclusively in 2014.[62]

The introduction in the United States was initially scheduled for January 2014, but was delayed.[51] [63] Due to Calif.'s regulations that require a electric battery-monitoring unit (BMU), Mitsubishi delayed the market set up in the U.S. for the last quarter of 2015. The BMU conducts onboard diagnosis of the Outlander's lithium ion battery capacitance and turnout, and information technology alerts the driver to possible degradation, which might affect the fomite's emissions.[64] In January 2015 it was rescheduled again. Mitsubishi introduced a redesigned version as model twelvemonth 2017.
